CRETAN LIRA:WHAT IS IT? 0.00€

Cretan LYRA came from the Byzantine LYRA which was imported after 961 A.D. when Crete was reconquered by the Byzantine empire with military intervention of the army general Nikiforos Fokas.Crete was under Arab occupation until this time. Aristocratic families settled in Crete from Constantinoupole(Instabul) in order to renforce Greek element but also the replenishment of the population.By this act Byzantine traditions where adopted from native Cretan people. This story is one of the four versions of the true origin of our LYRA and the most preponderant one.3 differend kind of Cretan LYRA exists in our days:”LYRAKI” a small version today`s LYRA almost identical to the byzantine LYRA and it is used only as accompaniment for Cretan popular dances.”VRONDOLYRA” produce extremely powerfull sound, ideal for accompaniment in open spaces. The COMMON LYRA popular in Crete as it is today. Occurred by the combination of violin and small LYRA(LYRAKI).The violin influence caused the reformation of many characteristics of the old Cretan LYRA form to modern LYRA.Reformation characteristics like timing, the actual performance and the repertoire of works. In 1920 violinLYRA(VIOLOLYRA) was created in an attempt of the native manufacturers of musical instruments to give violin`s sound and technical capabilities to the old byzantine small LYRA(Lyraki).Twenty years later,a new violin-smalLLYRA combination has an aftereffect the creation of common LYRA.Other spieces include the four-string LYRA. LYRA has “pear shape” body or elliptical cap.Usually it has two semicircular sound holes.Body and “neck” carved from the same piece of wood which is allowed for at least 10 years to age.Traditionally wood came from trees existing on the island, mostly oak, maple or mulberry.Timber for this purpose is mainly imported. The cup is also carved in a more shallow arch and is usually build from soft wood with straight wood grain.Traditionally it was made from dilapidated beams (katrania) but ideal beams came from three hunded years old venetian rubble. In tha past strings were made from casings and bow from horsetail hair. The bow was usually loaded with a number of spherical bells(gerakokoudouna),in order to give rhythmic accompaniment to melody.Nowadays, most LYRA are played with violin bow.
